Development of a mental health module for the New Zealand Health Survey

Developed a module for the New Zealand Health Survey that measured key aspects of New Zealanders’ mental health and mental health service use. The module was fielded in 2016/17 and was New Zealand’s first measurement of population mental health since 2003.

This work involved:

  • consultation with key stakeholders and synthesis of the data needs that they identified
  • reviewing relevant literature, and identifying validated survey instruments that could meet needs and be achieved within a brief survey module
  • presentation of findings and recommendations to the New Zealand Health Survey’s Governance Group
  • development of a first draft questionnaire, in collaboration with Ministry staff.
